Our History & Montfortian Legacy
Our History & Montfortian Legacy
The International Montfortian Itinerant Team (1988–2005) was a mobile formation unit that travelled across Eastern Africa, animating pastoral teams, catechists, and Small Christian Communities (SCCs). Its approach was revolutionary: learning‑to‑action – participants were not passive recipients but active agents of their own spiritual and leadership growth.
Rooted in the missionary spirit of St. Louis‑Marie Grignion de Montfort (1673–1716), the team embodied his conviction that formation must be integral – transforming the whole person to become a servant leader. The Second Vatican Council’s call for a more participatory Church found practical expression in these itinerant missions.
IGNIS was born from this legacy. We recognised that while the itinerant model was highly effective, its sustainability was challenged by a clerical mindset that underestimated the theological capacity of the laity, lack of structured follow‑up and institutional ownership, insufficient resource mobilisation, and digital adaptation. Today, IGNIS builds on that foundation while addressing those gaps.
Our Mission, Vision & Values
Vision: Christian leaders in Eastern Africa – ordained, religious, and lay – who are spiritually grounded, practically competent, and passionately committed to renewing the Church and society.
Mission: To ignite in leaders a transformative passion for service through integral formation that combines inner conversion, practical intelligence, and communal discernment – rooted in Montfortian spirituality and African wisdom.
Core Values: Integral Formation, Learning‑to‑Action, Ubuntu & Synodality, Mission‑Driven Excellence, Inclusivity.
What Sets Us Apart
We do not produce competent leaders who are then inspired. Passion and skill are enkindled together – formation and mission as one.
Our formation draws on centuries of servant-leadership wisdom and the living social traditions of Eastern Africa – Ubuntu, synodality, and communal discernment.
We accompany individuals, leadership teams, and institutions – integrating inner transformation with practical organizational competence for lasting renewal.
